Baby’s First Foods: A Mother’s Guide to Whole Grains and Family Nourishment, by Theresa Powers

Baby’s First Foods takes the guesswork out of preparing fresh, inexpensive baby foods from real, whole foods. Even if you are experienced with whole-foods cooking, your new-mommy brain, which is likely operating on little sleep, will appreciate that so much of the work is done for you! Specific cooking times are provided for a number of grains, fruits, and vegetables. A full two months’ worth of menus for baby is included, which accounts for introducing one new food at a time.

If whole-foods cooking is new to you, you will benefit even more greatly from Theresa Powers’ text, which will introduce you to the wonderful world of pressure cookers, grain mills, and heavy-duty mixers. (These tools all help in the timely preparation of whole, healthy foods.) You will find instructions for baking bread, as well as tasty recipes to prepare for breakfast, dinner, and snacks. Those of you new to holiday entertaining will find the holiday meal instructions beneficial.

The last section of the book contains additional projects to benefit new mothers and babies in areas outside of the kitchen. There are sewing projects, herbal formulas, and journal-keeping instructions.

A few final notes will increase your appreciation of this terrific resource. The book itself is a beautiful hardcover with a full-color cover and lovely vintage-look brown ink and line drawings. Dessert and similar recipes do contain sugar, although the sugar used is raw and/or less refined than white sugar. Vegetarians will appreciate that the main baby food section is entirely vegan.

Baby’s First Foods makes a wonderful gift for young mothers – one that will enrich their lives and the lives of their children for many years to come as they enjoy the benefits of good health produced by sound nutrition. It makes a good addition to whole-foods cookbook collections, with its specific cooking instructions and yummy recipes. It would even be a good option for inclusion in a hope chest!
