Exciting Day for Parental Rights

March 31, 2009

My hubby is headed into Washington, D.C. today for something very exciting.  There is a press conference today to announce the introduction of the Parental Rights Amendment in Congress!  Rep. Pete Hoekstra will be introducing the bill in the House, with a total of SEVENTY cosponsors!   The bill will be introduced in the Senate, as well.  Now is the time to make the push – to make your voice heard.  Let your senators and representatives know that you want them to vote for this bill.  Pass the news on to everyone you know, and urge them to do the same.

If you still aren’t sure why we need this amendment, visit ParentalRights.org for more information.

They’re Here!

Our cabinets, that is.  This is the pile of parts in our garage.  Here’s the pile of cabinets with Ariel standing beside it to give some idea of height:

And here’s the whole carport.  (Notice that there are also a couple of boxes sitting on the bricks at the right, as well as some things leaning against the wall on the left.)

We get to put these all together (after Michael paints them – he is so not excited about the painting part, as they have beaded-board-style doors).  The project is overwhelming, but a little exciting. :)

City Information

March 28, 2009

I think I’ve mentioned this site before, but I can’t recall for sure.  It’s called Sperling’s Best Places, and it has information about cities all over the country.  As one might expect, some of the biggest cities in the U.S. are the most popular searches, but it isn’t confined to big cities; I’ve not looked up a place yet that it didn’t have in the database.  It’s better for moving information, though, than for visiting purposes, as it’s most demographic-type stuff.  If, for instance, you need to know how to find a San Diego California hotel, you’ll have to look elsewhere.  But if you want to know the ratio of women to men in Seattle, this is your site.  If you want to know how the local high schools scored in English, or how many “minority” students there are, look here.  If you’re considering moving to a particular town and you want to know how the cost of living and median income compares to the country as a whole, or to your current place of residence, Sperling’s probably has the information you’re looking for.

Busy, Busy, Busy!

March 25, 2009

Wow; it’s been a busy week or so.  We went to IKEA last Thursday night and bought bookcases and ordered kitchen cabinets.  That was a fiasco, as we had (unknown to us) a cap on our debit cards, which happened to be lower than the cost of our cabinets.  So our cards were rejected at IKEA (two hours away from home), and they don’t take a check.  Fun.  But we did finally manage to get them paid for, and they are coming on Saturday!!

Meanwhile, we have been assembling bookcases and finagling them into the library, which is no mean task considering all of the books (and the few old bookcases) which were already in here.  They’re almost all up and in now, though, and I expect photos to follow before too long (once I get the majority of the books unpacked so you can actually see both sides of the room at once).

I have also been cracking down on child training with the girls (boy, were they out of control; we’re all much saner now!), doing some of our more routine shopping (like the “big” grocery trip for the month), and picking up some new utilitarian-type things.  (For instance, we bought trash cans and sink drain plugs/strainers today.  Seems very unexciting, I’m sure, but I am thrilled to finally have a sink drain plug.  I kept forgetting I didn’t have one until I was standing at the sink trying to wash dishes.)  And other kitchen parts have been arriving, too: cabinet hardware, a new faucet, and a light fixture.  The dishwasher should be ready for pickup any time now.  And I have a new dehydrator and pots and pans (thank you, Honey, for my birthday present :D ), too!  And Michael’s new computer arrived today.  So it has been an exciting week of new “stuff,” but also very busy.

I will need to get cracking on sewing, too.  We have a number of curtains that need hemming, and the girls’ Passover dresses are all cut out and waiting on me (and a little bit of space in the library).  Hopefully that means some fun and exciting pictures will be coming in the next several weeks. :)

Cleansing

March 15, 2009

Have any of my readers ever tried a colon cleanse?  What did you use, and did it work for you?  The ones you can buy are often marketed as weight loss supplements, because losing the extra sludge takes off pounds, and then being without the extra toxins helps get the weight-loss process moving again.  I would think, though, that not having toxins sitting around in the body would help anyone’s health, whether he needs to lose weight or not.  I can’t fast because I’m so underweight, so I would need to use something that works without fasting.  I’m thinking about trying Bromalite; it has probiotics and other things that I would think would be good for me, even if it doesn’t accomplish its advertised purpose.  Does anyone have any experience with it?  I would definitely love to get to the bottom of whatever is shredding my health!

ETA: Never mind.  Keep well away from this company!  There are dozens of complaints on the internet about people whose credit cards were charged even after canceling before the trial period was over, people were charged extra times or for extra products, etc.  Whether the product works or not, the company doesn’t seem to be one that anyone should do business with.
