The Complete Hawaiian Reef Coloring Book
If you will be studying Hawaii or oceans anytime soon – or if your kids just like fish – take a look at The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book, by Monika Mira. If you’re familiar with Dover coloring books, this is kind of like that. As in, much more than a coloring book. (This isn’t a Dover book, though. I don’t want to confuse anybody.)
One hundred four pages contain detailed, lifelike coloring pages encompassing a wide variety of fish found in the coral reefs off Hawaii’s coasts, and related information. In addition to the drawings of various fish species, there are drawings of the reef itself, the general anatomy (internal and external) of a fish, various body shapes, mouth and fin designs, and scale types. Coloration and reproduction are also addressed.
You might think that some of this is useless as coloring pages, and you might be right if they were just coloring pages. But they’re not just coloring pages. Information is offered alongside each drawing. There is a lot of information packed into this book, and its all done without a lot of “fluff.” (I like that – to the point!) This would be a wonderful way to immerse students in general zoological concepts such as classification, diurnal vs. nocturnal, camouflage, etc. All of these concepts are tackled here, as they relate to the reef fish.
When your children are finished coloring it, keep the book for reference. A glossary and index follow the 104 coloring pages. There’s even suggested reading!
For you homeschool mamas (or classroom teachers), the author has put together a list of sample test questions that are available upon request.
I think this will be a great way for my kinesthetic learner to manage some “book work,” especially when we study oceans. (Coloring is kinesthetic!)
Disclosure: I received a copy of the above-mentioned book from the author free of charge to facilitate this review. Of course, as always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
