One of the ways that workboxes improve our schooling is that they remind to put fun things in. This costume didn’t even manage to make it into the workboxes, though, before Ariel had asked to wear it several times! It was less than $15 from www.WholesaleCostumeClub.com, and Ariel loves it.
I always buy costumes for dress-up in Ariel’s size, because Sophia can wear a too-big costume, but Ariel can’t fit into one that’s too small. This particular one is not of quite as good quality as the Renaissance one we got in the fall – the fabric is more of that low-grade polyester-type stuff typical of costumes – but Ariel likes it better because she says it’s more comfortable. (I think the seams, in particular, are softer. The fabric has kind of a “silky” feel.)
Overall, it’s a great inexpensive option for a Colonial costume, except for the hat. The hat is enormous, even on me, and it’s a component in a costume that’s supposed to be for kids. Bobby-pinned in place it might work, but the girls usually just wear the dress without the hat.
Along with hands-on activities, our girls seem to really like getting to dress to fit the theme of our units; it helps to draw them in and keep their interest. Wholesale Costume Club has costume options at a variety of price points (including some nicer Colonial dresses, and accessories). And you can find WCC on Facebook, too.
Disclosure: The retailer provided me with the costume shown above to facilitate this review. As always, all opinions are my own. (The photo came from their site, too, as my children have not stood still long enough for me to get a picture yet.)
