Entertain Like a {Texas} Gentleman

Entertain Like a {Texas} Gentleman is just what the name suggests: a cookbook for men, focused on hosting food-centric parties.  Although some of the food gets pretty gourmet, this is definitely a man’s cookbook.  There is strong drink here and occasional strong language.  Mostly, though, the general tone is clearly a man writing for men.

I highlight it here and now because it is the perfect tool for a man who wants to surprise his woman by preparing a romantic dinner for Valentine’s Day.  However, it isn’t nearly that limited.  Chapters are titled based on the occasion for which they’re appropriate.  Each one has a selection of recipes to create the meal.  In most cases, this is 4-5 recipes.  (Breakfast and brunch have three each; the appetizer party has more.)

The first chapter, Entertaining 101, addresses the basics and sets the expectations for the book.  After this, we get into the actual occasions with their accompanying recipes.  These include:

Scotch Tasting Affair
Super Bowl/March Madness
Cheese and Wine Party
The Initial Flame
It’s Too D*** Hot to Cook
Pool Party
Friday Night Tailgating
Octoberfest
Texas Hold ‘Em
Romantic Dinner (Spring/Summer)
Cooking with Kiddos
Romantic Dinner Another Night (Fall/Winter)
Double Date Night
Breakfast in Bed
Brunch with the In-Laws
Cocktail Party Finger Food

I’m pretty boring and un-gourmet, myself, and, to be honest, this is a bit high-brow for me.  Recipes are things like “goat cheese quesadillas with watermelon salsa” and “duck confit jalapeño poppers.”  These don’t really appeal to me – I’d just as soon have a hamburger.  If this sort of thing floats your boat, though, Entertain Like a {Texas} Gentleman is a great cookbook.  It’s very straightforward and fuss-free, with clear instructions.  If I did want to cook gourmet food, this is the cookbook I’d want to do it with.
