Building Your Own Website
Hosting
If you're going to build your own website, the first thing you will need is a host.
A web host is a person or company which provides the space where your site will
reside. Even the nicest page isn't of any use if it doesn't have someplace to "live"!
There are a few things you should look for when you're looking for a host.
One factor is, obviously, price. There are many hosts out there charging $19.99
per month or more. If you look carefully, though, you should be able to find
one for far less. There are a couple of hosts (including mine) where you can buy
space for about $5/month.
You will also need to be aware of ease of use. These super-inexpensive hosts
generally aren't set up to accommodate the internet-clueless; they tend to not
offer many tools for the actual building of the site. If, like me, you prefer to
build the site yourself (offline) and simply upload it, one of these hosts should
serve your needs beautifully. If, on the other hand, you prefer a don't-need-to-know-anything-about-websites
approach, you may want to look for a host (like CityMax) with a "site builder" included.
Storage space and bandwidth are two of the most significant factors to consider when seeking
a web host. Storage space is just, literally, that. It is the amount of space
allocated for your files. Many hosts will offer huge amounts of storage space in
an attempt to make their services look good, but the truth is you really don't need
very much space. The entire Titus 2 Homemaker site,
uses less than 15 MB (megabytes) of space. Most personal and
small business sites will require less than 50 MB. Bandwidth is the amount
of transfer allowed in a given month. Every time someone views one of your pages,
the page itself is downloaded, along with any images, sounds, etc. displayed on
that page. Each of these downloads uses bandwidth. The larger your pages
are, and the more visitors your site gets, the more bandwidth you will need. You
are better off with more bandwidth than more space. Also, check into what the
penalties are for going over your allotted bandwidth for the month. Some hosts
will shut your site down until the following month, some will charge you overage
fees, and some may charge you for a more expensive plan.
There are other considerations, as well, but they will vary depending on your needs. Does
the hosting plan offer a shopping cart? Email addresses? Chat? Bulletin boards?
Is your domain name included or will you need to register a domain name separately?
Are subdomains allowed? (A subdomain is the part of the address where "www" would
normally be. Web.homeworksbest.net is a subdomain of www.homeworksbest.net.) Check
for a guaranteed uptime; this should be pretty high - around 99%.
This site is hosted by
Edmunds Enterprises.
